Killing corona viruses with hand sanitisers

Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol. Supervise young children when they use hand sanitiser to prevent swallowing alcohol, especially in schools and childcare facilities.

• Put enough sanitiser on your hands to cover all surfaces.
• Rub your hands together until they feel dry (this should take around 20 seconds).
• Do NOT rinse or wipe off the hand sanitiser before it's dry.

How does hand sanitiser work?

Hand sanitisers are a convenient way to clean your hands when soap and water aren't available. Hand sanitisers contain either ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. These alcohols are known to kill germs by denaturing the protective outer proteins of microbes and dissolving their membranes. Are all hand sanitisers created equal? It's essential to make sure any hand sanitiser you use contains at least 60 per cent alcohol.
